Aging with Grace
As the years past, the Nintendo 64 fell into obscurity.
However, many of the games remain classics among fans everywhere.
Collectors still own working versions of the Nintendo 64 and games, including this game.
There even those who have worked with the game so much, they've found things that no other player would have seen otherwise.
Things that happen in games, but aren't supposed to are called glitches, or exploits in the code that allow for illegal actions to actually happen.
There is a community of people called Speed Runners, who use these glitches in order to finish that game as fast as possible, and in record time.
ADGQ (Awesome Games Done Quick) Charity Run 2014
Player "Peaches_" plays Super Mario 64 with one hand, demonstrating some of the glitches.
He finishes in under an half an hour with only 16 stars.
Another player finishes in 5 Minutes with 0 Stars
As Peaches demonstrated, there are a few different glitches that can be done.
- Backward Long Jumps (BLJs) up stairs and through doors
- MIPS (The Rabbit) Glitching through walls
- Double jump up the spiral staircase
- Wall Clipping (Passing through walls to go out of bounds)
|
Because Mario doesn't have a backwards speed cap, the BLJ is possible. Without a doubt, the hardest and most important glitch is the Backwards Long Jump. It is very difficult even for seasoned players of the game and requires a lot of precise movement.
How to do the BLJ
- Stand on the stairs, facing away from the stairs and toward the camera
- Long Jump toward the camera while holding the control stick up as if moving up the stairs
- Repeatedly long jump until Mario convulsively long jumps up the stairs at blinding speed
- The speed going back when he reaches the landing should cause him to speed through the door at the top, clipping through it
